Greenery is one of the easiest ways to decorate for the winter holidays and Christmas. We see it frequently in wreaths and garlands and swags. Using greenery can be cost effective because it lasts without water and can still look good.
Types of Christmas Greenery
Eucalyptus: This is seeded eucalyptus which has more oval leaves and small green seeds. It makes pretty garlands, wreaths, and filler. You can also use other types of eucalyptus such as silver dollar.
Cypress: This evergreen has long branches that drape making it very pretty in arrangements or a wreath.
Cedar/Juniper: These branches are smaller and fuller. The are great for filler in vases and arrangements. You may find some with small berries.
Boxwood: This simple stem has dark green leaves. It is nice for accents, wreaths, and garlands.
Other not shown above:
Holly: Has dark green leaves wit ragged edged and sometimes white stripes. Best known for its red berries.
Magnolia: Known in the south for its large, dark, glossy leaves with brown underside, these leaves are a great base or filler.
Pine: Another evergreen, pine needles range from short stems to long flowing clumps.
When it comes to holiday greenery, you can usually buy small bunches at the grocery store. You may also have a bulk florist nearby to get large amounts. However, I have frequently taken my clippers outside and pruned some of the trees and shrubs on our property to acquire fresh Christmas greenery. You could make it a family adventure to forage for greenery for winter holidays.
Holiday Centerpiece
Putting greenery together for a table centerpiece is easy:
Place lanterns or large decor
Start with the large pieces of greenery, in this case the cypress. Then add fuller pieces, such as cedar or pine.
Then, add candles, containers filled with cranberries, pine cones, or vases with white flowers.
Use the eucalyptus and boxwood for accents around the focal points.
Finish with a table runner or ribbon.
You can also put the greenery together with some roses or flowers for a Christmas centerpiece for your own holiday table or as a gift.
Start by filling a vase or bowl with different types of greenery.
Add flowers
Fill any empty spaces with additional greenery
Finish with focal items such as ornaments, ribbon, or accents
