Outdoor Adventures
Because of all the amazing natural areas, outdoor enthusiasts will love all the adventure sports available:
Skiing, Boating, Mountain Biking, Whitewater/Kayaking.
The Wisp. This resort offers year round recreation with skiing, snow tubing, zip lines, and a mountain coaster.
Adventure Sport Center This is the place for kayaking and whitewater adventure.
Deep Creek Marina Rent a boat and spend a day or 3 enjoying the lake
Garrett Trails This website keeps a list of local hiking and biking trails by area and difficulty.
State Parks and Natural Areas
Because the area has numerous national forests, natural areas and state parks, there is no shortage of outdoor options. Everyone has their favorite park but all of them provide great scenery, hiking, or recreation.
New Germany State Park This park is smaller and less frequented than other areas. It provides camping and a swimming beach.
Cranesville Swamp This boreal bog is a relic from a previous era, with plants not native to the area. Great for getting away from noise and traffic.
Swallow Falls This popular area is filled with old-growth forests and beautiful waterfalls.
What to See
The area dates back to before the Revolutionary War so history is truly abundant. George Washington literally slept everywhere, lol.
Casselman River Bridge dates back to the early 1800s and was part of the National Road
Spruce Artisan Village at Penn Alps - This village of artisan cabins with homemade crafts and art, and nearby restaurants is a great place to visit.
Hilltop Fruit Market This small grocery store is actually best known for their large assortment of candy.
Take a Scenic Drive With beautiful scenery everywhere, take a drive around the county. Rock Lodge Road has a well photographed split rail fence.
Where to Eat
The area is known for amazing Amish country food and baked goods. You can find local maple syrup and Amish donuts and desserts.
The Rolling Pin - This shop in Accident serves Amish desserts and baked goods. One of our guilty pleasures when we visit.
Firefly Farms Creamery - In the center of Accident, this shop serves award winning goat cheese, as well as artisan bread, meats, and wines.
Ledo Pizza - In McHenry, this pizza shop offers a great quick meal.
Casselman Restaurant - On the north side of the county in Grantsville, this restaurant is set in an historic inn.
This region is a great place for your next travel destination. Be sure to visit the out of the way places and small roadside stands to get a feel for this area.
