Time for Class

One of the benefits of being near a large university hospital with a children's hospital is that we have a lot of resources.

Before our son was discharged from the PICU, we had a 2 hour training session in his room and another one scheduled for 2 weeks later. Additionally, we had daily call-ins with a nurse. We were also given a very large binder of info.

Within the first 8 weeks after diagnosis, we attended 3 diabetes classes each lasting 2-3 hours.

It is both overwhelming and informative. If you fail an English class, no one dies. If we fail counting carbs or dosing insulin, our son could end up back in the hospital.

One of the biggest themes from the classes, is to teach us to be knowleadgeble enough to take control of managing his disease. Even though we have carb counts and correction doses, a lot of it is making educated guesses. Is he going to exercise a lot after this meal? How much rice is actually in that burrito? Should we delay his dose 45 minutes?

Still so much to learn…
