A Visit to the ICU

After our daughter's close call with her anaphylactic reaction, we had been parenting on auto-pilot - if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.

Well that worked for about 2 weeks. Then, one day our son said he thought he had a cold and stayed home while I ran some errands. Well his sister found him almost unconscious on the floor. His dad and I rushed him to the nearby children’s E.R.

They quickly evaluated him and called a specialty pediatric ambulance to transfer him to the children's hospital. After stabilizing him in the emergency room, they eventually got him settled in the PICU and informed us that he had Type 1 diabetes. His blood sugar was 695. He was on saline, insulin, and oxygen as well as other IV’s.

Thankfully, they treated him quickly and his numbers started stabilizing. He recovered amazingly fast, and we went home late the next afternoon, exhausted but so thankful that we were all together.

2 kids. 2 weeks. 2 incredibly close calls.

So now we are adding 2am glucose checks and lots of sleepless night while we learn this new life changing disease.
