Amish Produce Auction

I recently visited the Plowboy Produce Auction located on 469 South Brace Road in Ethridge, TN.  It was a unique combination of fun and productive.  All of the food for auction is grown by the local Amish families who also run the auction.

The auction starts at 1:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.   The auction begins with lots then moves on to large wagon loads and then finishes with the remaining lots.  The building was constructed so that the wagons (pulled by horses) could be driven through the middle of the building while the buyers stand up above and see the produce.  The first time you visit, you will need to register and receive your your buying number.  They accept cash and checks.

I purchased a large amount of some vegetables and small amounts of others due to availability and the price I was willing to pay.  Since all produce is grown locally, there are no exotic or out of season items available.  There is a large selection of vegetables and some fruits.  Some items sold in very large increments, such as 100 cantaloupe.  Others sold in smaller boxes or bags.  My children loved watching the Amish children work around the auction.  The boys drove wagons and loaded/unloaded the boxes.  The girls either watched the younger children or helped clean up.

It was a very productive day and I brought home a lot of vegetables that I froze or canned for future use.  I will be going back again to see the new selection of vegetables available as the season goes on.  This would be great to purchase and split with friends or family.
